As I recall, as a boy, my grandma used shrimp for catfish bait...You don't hear of that practice so much on here...I know that by state law, you cant use imported shrimp in Texas waters...what about good old wild sourced gulf shrimp?

I've seen it used since a child. The frozen paper box of shrimp at HEB.

Says on the package, don't eat it.

I've seen Wal-Mart frozen shrimp used.

It's a standard catfish bait. An all time classic.

Use what you want. I’ve seen it work, I suppose it’s supposed to be like a crawfish. It’s not going to be as good as Shad or any other fresh cut or live fish that you catch in the same water body.

Try shrimp on a trot line.

It'll stay on the hook in a moving current. If nothing bites it, it'll still be on in the morning. River fishing.

Lake trot lines. Shrimp and grasshoppers. Alternating. Find out what the feeders are biting on.

Well, gulf caught shrimp netted me an 8 lb blue yesterday while drifting across Lake Corpus Christi. What fun! grin

Used it a lot before I started making my own punch bait and caught a bunch of fish on it. If there is a downside it's that perch will peck it to pieces.

Put you a bit of anise oil on it and get ready.

Hmm. I have not checked into it lately, but certain shrimp (as to its origin) was not to be used for bait as per TP&W rules, due to some disease. Best to check to be sure.

I am in town, so I don't have the new Rules booklet with me, nor access to my TP&W mags.

Shrimp caught out of the Gulf of Mexico are okay as far as Texas Parks and Wildlife are concerned. I saved the packaging the shrimp came in which stated that they were wild caught out of the Gulf of Mexico, in case I was questioned.

Shrimp soaked in Garlic Powder was always the trick for me as a kid. Always had a guy selling JUMBO shrimp on the side of the road by Caleveras or Braunig lake.

Shrimp is all I use because we buy it all the time and sometimes we leave it out to long so it becomes catfish bait. It's a good eater catfish bait. I will admit I seldom fish for catfish.

I have never had a bite on shrimp... It seems like it should be hot fire! But never been productive at all for me. And I have caught cats on smoked turkey and brisket ends. But never on a shrimp if you can believe that. Turtles like it real well.
