Was fishing on the dock today after the water receded. Had two rods in rod holders and was holding the third. Stuck it a metal chair and ran up to the house to get a water. Came back and the rod was gone. I almost put it in a PVC rod holder, but the water was up to the top of the dock and the PVC was slightly submerged. The spinning reel was a WaveSpin Doug Hannon gave me a few years before he passed, and the rod was an old All Star maroon and gray medium light I bought 30 years ago for fishing the coast. Made for an excellent crappie rod. I've been using a grappling hook down there trying to find it. Big bummer!!!

Hate to hear that but…if Hannon ever gave me a rig, it would be AUTOMATICALLY retired.
and AllStar was top shelf.

If its still pretty shallow, take a dip maybe. Nothing is more upsetting while dock fishing than losing a rod.

sorry to hear you lost your rod/reel.....maybe the story below will make you feel a little better or at least hopeful that a nice guy (like me) will find it and sell it back to you..
...several years ago was fishing a Redman(BFL) tourney on Lake Sinclair(Ga.)..was fishing around docks and came up on one with couple little boys bream fishing off it..one was probably 6 years old and other one couple years older........did the usual "catching anything" greeting and both of them started telling me about a giant catfish had pulled their fishing rod out of the holder and swam off the night before and it was the older boys brand new rod and reel....both of the boys were kinda dejected over losing the rod and we told them we were sorry and continued fishing down the bank... probably about two docks down,I saw a bobber in water at edge of a boat house with no rods on nearby docks...just on a hunch,I raised the bobber up with my rod tip and pulled the bobber to the boat and pulled in the line....no giant catfish but there was a brand new rod and push button reel....
I turned around and headed back where the boys were on the dock....as I got with within earshot I told them I had found a rod and reel that I might sell cheap...the older boy asked how much and I replied probably a dollar would be enough....older boy told the younger one to run up to the house and get a "dollar from Daddy"...and younger started to the house and I told him to hold on a minute til they saw the rod because it might not be worth a dollar....I can tell you,it was worth a hundred dollars to see the look on their faces when they saw the rod lying on my deck, recognized it as theirs and both of them trying to tell me at same time that was the rod the catfish had swam away with...I told them that if that was their rod,I just couldn't charge them anything......and it was worth another hundred dollars to have seen them running up to the cabin hollering out to their Dad they had got their rod back.......

Found it!!! Got one of my saltwater rigs and put a treble and weight on it. Hooked the rod on the third or fourth cast. It was about 10 or 12 feet from the dock. I have a few more reels that Doug gave me, in the box, with notes on them, so wasn't fishing the only one I had. Still hated thinking I may have lost that rig.

I watched a buddy loose one while getting a license check. A while later he caught a fish that had a line wrapped around it. Got his rod back and the fish that pulled it in.

Recently happened to me. Fish sucked my wife’s crappie rod off the pier. I fished around and could never find it. A couple weeks ago I look out the window. Someone had snagged it and put it back in the rod holder on my pier.

I had another amazing rod recovery at Falcon many years ago. Elizabeth and I were fishing and the bite was really on. We were in about 20 feet, slaying 3-7 pounders on Texas rigs. She got caught on something and the rod went flying out of her hands. I made a few casts trying to recover it, but wanted to get back to fishing, so I tied a Snickers wrapper on a stick-up where we lost it. Rod was a custom Joe Graves Texas Sidewinder. We came back later that day, I again cast with a treble hook, and eventually caught the braided line. I don't use that rod much anymore, but it's still part of the arsenal.

I snagged a rig that had been lost for over a month... I still would go back and try for it every week.
They way I snagged it was wild, unbelievable almost... there was a crankbait on the sunken rod and I hooked the O-ring, the line tie ring on the crankbait. The crank bait had been reeled to the tip of the rod when it fell over. I got the hook of the recovery lure (a slab I was dragging) right in that line tie on that crank... amazing.
Would have been hard to use my hand to thread that hook through that line tie... but that is where I got it.
Crazy.

I really liked Doug's approach to catching big bass. No metal flake boats, camo instead, low to the water, no standing up or high rise chairs, be quiet, be stealthy, big fish are survivors and they're smart.

Yep, I have some photos of his aluminum boat, called the Littoral Zone, that I took after his funeral. He trolled live shiners 100+ feet behind his boat to catch most of his 10+ bass. Not for sure on the trolling distance ... might have been 200-300 feet. He had a lot of cool inventions on that boat, including an anchor he designed for river fishing. He also spent a lot of time in his bay boat fishing the Gulf out from Tarpon Springs.

fished Redman,Stren/Everstart series tourneys and had numerous co-anglers over the years... not sure about most of them but.had one co-angler that I'm sure speaks highly of me... we were fishing a Stren series tournament on eufaula and i had run way up the river to small cove just off main river...my co-angler was a young guy and he had shown me a new rod/reel combo he had just bought...I pull in cove and first few casts I catch a small bass,co-angler nets it for me and somehow kicks his new rod into the lake....I really didn't want to stop and try to retrieve it because the early bite was critical but I tied on a spoon and we spent probably 15 minutes trying to retrieve his rod with no luck...young guy tells me to go ahead and fish and that he knows I'm wasting valuable early morning time so I went ahead and started fishing around the cove. he lived in another part of the state and asked me if i was in the area again, would I try to retrieve his rod and I agreed to do so... we fished all the way around this cove and i was idling out when I decided to give it a few more minutes trying to retrieve his rod...first drop with the spoon and I hooked it and brought it to the boat....probably closest (and only time) I ever came to getting a hug from a co-angler....

That's a cool story beartrap. Good on ya for trying the first 15 min and great luck on snagging his new rod and reel.

The recovered rod is now the lucky rod. Caught 3 in about half an hour fishing 2 rigs. All caught on the All Star/WaveSpin. 1 blue, 1 channel, and a crappie.

I was fishing Texoma with bait. Light winds so we were drifting. Saw a school of big fish on the depth finder so I but on a 10" gizzard shad. Put the rod in the rod holder on the bow and turned to head back to the console. Heard a loud snap and other people with me said what was that. Turned around and the rod and holder are headed for OK. My favorite rod and reel and to make it worse Garcia had discontinued that model. I had engaged the bait clicker but when I put it in the rod holder I hit the handle and locked the spool. Now I pull on the line to make sure that does not happen. As much as losing the rod hurt I really wanted to see that fish.
