My wife and I are going to be camping at Mustang Island state park the last week of September, first week of October, anyone have any experience fishing the surf or banks in and around this area at that time of year ?? This will be a totally new place for us and have never set eyes on it before. I have fished Crystal beach several times at this time of year, so I am assuming that the fishing would be similar in nature. Are there bait stores near there, and if so, any recommendations on the best baits, live or artificial ? Any line set-ups that you know are affective would be appreciated as well. I enjoy the camping and quality time with the family but catching some fish really makes it nice as well. I realize that it is really early to start gathering intel but I like to be 100% prepared when I hit the water for the first time. Thanks in advance for anything that you may be able to offer and tight lines to everyone.

That is a great time to go to the park. You can fish in the surf, head south to the Packery Jetty or north to Port Aransas. The redfish should be moving along the surf and at the jetties. For lures, a 3/4 oz gold Johnson spoon is hard to beat. Shrimp, mullet, or cut bait should get you a bite on something. There is a bait shop under the big bridge to Corpus Christi, and bait stores in Port Aransas.

For added fun think about doing a trip with Dolphin Docks in Port Aransas. They have bay trips and offshore trips. My wife and I have done very well with them around that time of year.
