Let me begin by saying that I fish for bass out of my kayak.
Do you guys find it difficult to use a baitcaster out of your kayak? I feel like I can't get the casting distance, and I routinely snag my lure on something in the back of my kayak (tackle bag, the rod/reel I'm not using, etc....). Today, while casting, my lipless crankbait caught one of the line guides on the rod/reel I wasn't using, and it caused quite a mess. The extra rod/reel went in the water (I was able to pull it up), I got a super tangled backlash, and it just made me feel stupid.
I like using baitcasters for certain presentations, but they are definately more problematic in a kayak.

almost exclusively spin cast now. no more birds nest. what kind are you using? u might consider a softer cast, side arm cast, lighter line & or fine adjust your spool? with bait casters (Abu Garcias 5000 -6600s, i found that the spool needed to be adjusted often especially when i changed my lures.

Great question, Bill. I've had the same problems in the past, and it has pretty much limited by yak fishing to spinning reels.

I am thinking about going to just spinning reels, except for really deep cranks, heavy jigs, and heavy weights for Texas and Carolina rigs. Small hardbaits (cranks, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits) can be thrown on spinning gear with the use of a swivel and leader. I can get longer, more accurate, more frequent casts with spinning gear. When you are bass fishing, it's all about casting and keeping your bait moving through the water. It's nice to hear that others think the same way.

I use baitcasters while fishing out of my kayak with no abnormal amount of trouble. By that I mean no more trouble than I would have out of a boat standing.

I do agree that spinning reels cause the least amount of problems, but I like to pitch and roll cast a lot, so I gotta have my BCs. I usually have a heavy action and medium heavy action BC with me in the rod holders. The medium spinning rod stays up front with me. I'd be lost without any of them, personally.

I like using baitcasters for certain presentations, but they are definately more problematic in a kayak. Practice, mine are all pretty easy on me. I use Penn and Abu.

I have had small issues with my baitcaster but i rarely cast it. Its my short surf / offshore rod i use exclusivly for live or dead bait so i just cast it a few times a hour. I keep my medium fast spinning gear for casting all my lures. But i usually fish salt water. I have always loved spinning reels foe casting, with baitcasters you lose time fishing to backlash, especialy at night because you cannot see when your bait is going to hit the water

I hardly ever backlash with a bait caster and at least I have some control of a bad cast, so my lure seldom ends up in a tree or hung in a bush.

When I first started kayaking I took my yak out in the yard and practiced casting w/ a casting plug on my baitcaster until everything felt comfortable and right.
Every year before spring spawn I tie the casting plug back on a practice pitching and flipping until it is as smooth as if I'd been doing it all year long.

I predominately use a baitcaster out of my kayak and have no problems. I actually feel like I can aim better sitting down that close to the water. I do still carry spinning rods as well, I store my extras in a kayak box behind my seat so they are not in the path of my swing arc. I use an Abu Garcia Revo, and I love it. You do need to change the "tune" on the reel when swapping lures or you will backlash for sure

Speed-clip my friend...Speed-clip. Norman Lures Speed Clips, hard to use if you have wussy-fingers though(clearly not a problem for most of us). For the rest of you...adjust the little knob on the side and practice

i have just been raised on spinning gear and can target cast pretty damn well with it and get better distance that the baitcasters, but its all in personal preferences and experiences.
