I have a very cheap kayak for my son. It turns on a dime, even when you dont want it to! I devised my own rudder for it. [I'm a tightwad.]I took a wooden paddle and cut it about 2 inches above the wide part, drilled a small hole through the small end. Then I took the other half cut it down to about 2.5 feet and on the small wide part for your hand I cut out a u shape from the center, just a little bigger than the width of the handle, {smallest width}. I then bolted the handle down onto the top back of the yak, with it sticking out past the end of the yak about 6 inches. The small u shape has a hole drilled through and you run a bolt through to connect the two parts. If you can picture all of this in your mind! Basically my idea was to let the paddle end hang down into the water, but yet if you hit something it will swivell up and not break. And guess what, it looks weird but it works great! You can buy a 4 foot wooden paddle and all the hardware for about 10 bucks at wal-mart. This worked so well that my wife will now use the yak, she hated it before! Hope this might help. G.
