What about the Brazos?

What about the Brazos? - 08/08/07 07:29 PM

Anyone fished in the Brazos lately? I'm about 45 minutes from it, and was thinking about renting a canoe and doing a little fishing on the way down. The river is up, but with 100 degree + days, who knows for how long.
Anyway, anyone know anything about it? smile

Here is my posting from August 3rd and 4th.

---------------------------------------------------------------
I did the Brazos canoe trip from PK dam to Hwy 4 Saturday and Sunday. Two of us limited out both days on sandies. Three hybrids and 6 large mouth bass were also caught. The LMBs were released for another day. Countless other sandies were released. Fishing the first ten or so miles Saturday was much better than the last half on Sunday. Saturday they were generating power so the water level was good. All fish were caught on those feather crappie jigs; color didn’t matter chartreuse, all yellow and white tail black body and red heads all produced the same. One on the best trips I've had in a long time.

It's an awesome trip. My son and I did it a few years ago. Fishing was good overall. Rochelles is the place use. When you get into Palo Pinto on Hwy 180, take Hwy 4 (small road) till you reach the Brazos (5 miles?), Rochelles is there. Many places to stay along the river to camp. I would recommend the first level bank and not a sand bar (never know when the rivers gonna come up). Rochelles can fill you in on the land rules. Tie them canoes up good, those water levels float many of them away. If you get a south wind (common), its a work out but nothing we couldnt handle. Oh yeah, bring some leather gloves, helps prevent blisters.
Oh yeah, at some point you may see fighter jets training. They buzzed the river several times above us, very cool.

Float Tube Gal:

Check COE web page for flows etc and the BRA for a map of the river talked about above. All good advice also. You might be interested in "Bridges Over The Brazo" by Jon McConal and photos and maps by Eddie Lane. Will motivatre you to get there ASP.

Lots of great info guys! Thanks! Will be making the trip next weekend. Most of the summer folks are gone from what I understand. Should be a little more peaceful smile

I have never been to this area before but i really want to try it out. How exactly do i get below the dam? Im interested in fishing the spillway either on the bank or wading. Can you give me some advice as to where to fish and what lures work best(especially for stipers and whites).

Sounds fun! I've fished it once before and had a blast.
