BPS Kayak fishing package???? - 03/18/24 04:11 PM

Ive been looking at this kayak package from BPS https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/ascend-133x-tournament-sit-on-top-kayak-ultimate-fishing-package . I searched the forum and didnt see anything about this Im wondering what the seasoned yak'rs thoughts and concerns are. Ive read the 7 reviews on the website, was hoping a member has some experience in these. thanks in advance.

I can see how someone would be interested in that particular model with it being designed for a trolling motor up front.. Don’t know anything about it or the motor guide trolling motor.. I would see if that motor could be upgraded to the saltwater version as if you ever plan to fish the gulf coast I don’t think freshwater versions of any trolling motor would last.. Ascend kayaks have been around for some time and were considered an entry level kayak.. glad to see them come out with that type design as their earlier models were tough to paddle.

Biggest negative that I can see for this kayak is that it doesn't have a rudder .

I think if I were getting into kayaking I wouldn't get this. Personally I think you can get a much higher quality kayak, paddle, pfd and trolling motor if that's your thing for cheaper or the same price. A nice wilderness ride 135, atak 14 etc, tons of models. I'd also never get a trolling motor. Lots of extra weight between motor and batt. Learn to paddle or pedal. I just got my wife a hobie revolution 16 pedal drive kayak for 900. Lots of deals out there if you look

I dont know about that rig... how would it track with no rudder? With nothing to pin the back of it down... is that motor supposed to go in the back?

For that price you can get a nice used Hobie Outback, an Old Town, or even a new ATAK.

That said, if you dig it. Go for it! What do I know.

Lots of Ascends for sale used. Mostly because they are heavy and slow. They need a motor to move

Adding a trolling motor (MK #30=#15) and lithium battery (50aH=#11) is minimal weight when compared to Mirage drives weighing #20+
Rudders are essential for fishing IMHO
Paddling is out of the question for me after shoulder surgerys so I have both a pedal (Hobie Compass) and motor (Pelican Catch) drive kayaks.
I opt for the motor 80% of the time, getting either setup at the dock is about the same amount of time and effort. Title and tags for motoyak are about $20 every 2 years
No need for a specialized saltwater trolling motor unless it is in salt most of the time. My MK Endura trolling motor going strong after 10 years of occasional salt trips, just rinse it well soon after done.
To OP, decide which drive you want (paddle, pedal, motor) then go shopping. By all means, try any potential choices out on the water. What looks or sounds good on paper, often is disappointing in use

You don't really need a rudder

Agreed. I've had many, many kayaks and I can only think of 4 I have had a rudder on.

Thanks for all the input. I started digging further and am looking at Old Town Auto Pilot 120. Due to limited leg use, I will need powered mostly.

Excellent decision. Great choice. Old Town is a very well made and versatile platform.
