Advice on sale price for two old Hobie PA14s and trailer? - 04/20/24 11:55 PM

I have two older PA14s and a a tandem trailer. I think they are both 2014s. Bought mine new at Mariner Sail but cannot remember the date. Trailer is a Malone Megasport. My Kayak is well used…. Only issue is that it needs a part for the seat that broke. Otherwise, both are completely watertight. Has the normal wear and tear with scrapes and stains. Nothing terrible . It also has seadec installed. Her kayak is in great shape. Also includes one Hobie kayak cart and one Hobie standup bar.

Neighbor wants only one kayak but not the trailer but I think I’ll do better to sell both with the trailer.

Is $5k too much? Hit me straight. I can take it. I need to make room for my “new to me” PA17T.

If they are new enough to have the vantage seat, that’s a big plus. 14’s did so of both have it it helps. Next, do you have titles or MSO’s at least? Helps greatly as most people wanting pa14’s are tournament fisherman and those guys like motors. No title or MSO, it can be done at some TPWD offices because they want your money, but tax offices are clueless so they will be no help. If they’re both vantage seats and have a title or MSO plus the trailer, 5k isn’t “too much” but I’d be prepared to wait a bit to find the right buyer. Expect a lot of 4k-4500 offers on the high end til the right one comes along. Harder to sell 2 vs 1 and you gotta find the husband and wife that both fish and both willing to drop that much on a 10 year old pair of kayak.

Not out of line on the pricing I think, just gonna take a little time.

Thank you for the info! Yes they both have vantage seats. They also both have old non-180/non 360 mirage drives .I bought mine new at Mariner Sail but don’t recall the date or if if I got a MSO. Never considered that.

My neighbor wants one of them for his lake house but I figured it may be easier to sell the tandem trailer with both kayaks. ( or try that first.)

Thanks again.

Ya never know who might be out there looking for two older kayaks... if they are out there, they will jump on it. I think it's worth trying, but I personally wouldn't give it more than a month or two.

However, I tend to agree with Jeremy...in this case, I think the parts are greater than the sum and that you will probably have better luck selling the parts.

Given the age and lack of 180 drive, asking $1,750 each feels right to me... this should yield you at least $1,500 each.

I'm not sure about the trailer... Malone Trailers quality, but there is no shortage of "cheap" boat and jet ski trailers that can be retrofitted. My gut says that you won't get more than $1,000 for the trailer... not because it's "worth" this, but because someone can retrofit a boat trailer for less. Saying this, perhaps you can convert it to a single to haul your PA17?

This is nothing more than my "off-the-cuff" opinion. If CCTX is around, he tends to track stuff like this better than most... I would listen to him over me!

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Got a guy looking at trailer only tomorrow and the neighbor wants one of them. Might be down to one for sale. We’ll see.

Spring time is the time to sell. Demand is up. Take pictures and price everything separately on here and on FaceBook Marketplace. You should definitely sell to the neighbor because that is someone you can go fishing with.

Even better than that…. He is a super nice guy and has a lake house with a dock on Palestine I can use any time, and have. He refuses to take money but I keep him well stocked on beer. Trust me, I’m not usually that lucky.
Sold the trailer and one kayak to that neighbor. Couple People beating down the door for the other one. 2015 olive PA14 $2000, including standup bar, camo seadek, upgraded rudder and hobie wheels. Vantage Seat needs a $5 plastic piece and need a pin for the h bar, and new nets. A good boat.

In my opinion yes. The lack of a full h rail like the newer models have, the broken seat and the outdated pedal drive makes those hard to sell. I strongly recommend fixing the seat. I can see that being an issue for some. Heck newer models don’t sell that well mostly because they’re so heavy. The older ones have to be priced low to be attractive.
