Canoe Recommendation - 06/19/11 05:04 AM

Sorry guys I know these are not fishing questions but you guys would be best to answer them.

I am now looking at all the places to go and thinking I may want to buy my own canoe versus renting every weekend. If I did want to do this can you guys recommend a brand and size for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 little ones.

Drive out to Rochelle's and buy one of their used Old Town Discovery 169 canoes. They range from 200-400 dollars.

They are a little beat up, but the price is right.

I was going to look at used ones anyways. I dont want to break the bank on my first purchase, so beat up is alright.

where is this place located and is the name of the company Rochelle's?

thanks for the help

Here's an old thread that has some information that may help you in your selection of a canoe.

I saw one on Craig's List a while back for sale. It was aluminum and 40 foot long. Yes 40 foot, and the trailer didn't come with it.

Craig's List always seems to have several canoe's listed. Buy one for $300 or so and when you are done with it in a few years sell it for $300 or so.

Amen. They're inexpensive and they're tough. Just the right size for your family. And they're stable. Avoid the ones that are "Oil canned", that is the bottom is pushed up. They're a little on the heavy side, heavier than fiberglass and aluminum, but if you're young and healthy that should be no problem. And like JCG57 said, you can sell 'em for as much as you paid.
Maybe Rochelle will let you rent one for a day to see how you like it, and if you buy it, knock the rental fee off.

Thats exactly what I did--
he took the rental price off of what he was selling it for.

Sold it 3 years later for 350.00 in three hours off of craigs list.
