Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/08/13 08:04 PM

Well, after much discussion, Here is where we're going. Launching at 6:30.

Here is some info from Bull about where to go to launch.
Take it all the way down to the Y which is what they are calling blackhawk rd. and it will take you to the picninc area playground im talking about. You can then drive down that hill and unload and then park back in the parking lot. The spot we luanch at should'nt be hard to find. It's got grooves from where we load/unload and is almost straight down from the parking lot.

Looks like bass, crappie, and some catfish.

Who's in?

Just to clarify go all the way down Rockwood Park Drive N. the road that come right off by his marker on that map.

Channel cats, flat heads, bass, crappie, drum, and even the occasional sandbass if you get lucky.

125' from the parking lot, with the ability to drive to the water if i choose to is a lot more tempting than the 1/4 mile drag smile

I would call it a 75% yes

I'm thinking about joining all of you in the morning if that's ok. I'm ready for something different.

Are you talking about the parking lot that shows up as Rockwood Golf course on the map? I just want to make sure I'm heading to the right place. It's 65 miles for me, so I probably can't afford to make a wrong turn.

That link should give you the final destination parking lot... the one in the OP is the closest intersection.

I will be there tomorrow as well, short of me drinking too much tonight (it IS Friday afterall)

And looking at that launch, i think i am going to clean out my yak some tonight to lighten it as much as possible... Looks like a pretty grassy area without much of an opening

Have any of you guys launched at that spot before? G.A Gonzales and I fished that stretch of river yesterday and those banks are pretty steep.

I'm going by there today to check it out and make sure the water level isn't too low.

The launching is fine they just have to find the spot we launch from all the time. Shouldn't be too hard to spot as it is the easiest looking spot to launch from when you walk down there. We do it all time. Just have to slide your kayak down and set it in the water. There are some rocks to stan on close to the bank or in the water. It's really not that bad. Water lever should be fine also Ive never seen that stretch get very low.

The spot we use has a wide enough opening that it isnt bad. My friend launches his Native Mariner there fully loaded all the time. I wish I could go so I could show you guys exactly where but I think you should be able to spot it pretty easy.

Lots of small fish Terry.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 05:37 PM

The bite gets alot tougher in the summer. The big ones arent as ready to bite as normal. Fish slow out in the deeper rocks and Im sure you could get a few to bite.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 08:20 PM

Well, I checked out the launch spot today. Wow That's almost a straight drop with nothing but water at the bottom. I could probably launch from there, but I don't think my brother could in my pelican. If you can't stand in your yak, I don't think you can launch from there.

Picture.

This is another spot I found. I think someone might have mentioned it. Its off Northside. Its got an easy launch, but a heck of a hill. I would rather launch here, and just help each other with the yaks. I've got a cart that will fit any boat. ((Update, Looks like several of the Vets say the first launch should be do'able. I'm up for it. ))

Where is the nearest boat ramp? :-P

Good question!

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 08:51 PM

That spot on northside looks like it is only ~100 feet away. I could deal with a hill

Is there somewhere to park around there though?

Also looks like a spillway we would have to portage to get back to those trees where the other (steep) launch point is

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 09:06 PM

Yeah, I was standing on the parking lot when I took the picture. Plenty of parking. Short walk..hill is obviously a little steep, but do'able with someone to help and/or a cart.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 09:08 PM

Yeah, the only difference is that it will put us in a different area to fish.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 09:13 PM

Yeah, that sucks. If the banks that I saw are any indication, I don't think we could portage to the other area. Might just have to roll the dice. I really am concerned that my brother won't want to make that entry though. I don't know that I could get in my pelican at that spot.

Yeah, and im not too keen on running my PA12 over rocks either

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/09/13 09:16 PM

I think I might just hit the northside launch. I know we wont have those trees, but I'll feel more comfortable with the launch site.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/10/13 08:59 PM

I got to the park at 6:30, and LuvPondFishing was already launched and he actually caught a fish while I was checking out the launch area. I dropped my Commander in the water, and loaded it up. I just finished and was about to get in when Kayak_and_Crossbones showed up with his friend. Since his friend was rather new, I helped him get launched and them handed him his eq. I jumped in my yak and motored to the right for a minute, and immediately hooked a bass on a squarebill. And then it was unhooked, and I didn't get another bite for over an hour. I ended up catching 5 bass in about3-1/2 hours. LuvPondFishing caught 5 or 6 bass before I left, and also several nice gills and a catfish. KnC had to get his friend home early, and they were gone when I went back to the launch at 10:30 to check on them.

It was an hour drive for me, and although I won't make the trip frequently, I will definitely fish there again. It was a pretty setting in the middle of town. I saw 16' deep water sevral times. I went past the University bridge, and while I was visiting with a fisherman in a tube, I saw a waterskier down stream and decided I had gone far enough.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/10/13 09:22 PM

Good morning on the water. I didn't catch anything to write home about but ended up with a good multi-species day. 5 bass but none larger than 13 inches. 20-25 bluegill plus a 15 inch channel cat and an 11 inch crappie right before quitting time.

Thanks to Daniel for the invite and enjoyed meeting and fishing with Artie. Look forward to doing it again.

Re: Trinity River - Open Invite Details - 08/12/13 03:53 PM

We got there just before 7 and hit the water as quickly as we could. (Thanks to Arty for helping my brother launch.) The launch site was much easier than I thought.

We didn't have the stuff to wacky rig like they did so we were fishing a variety of lures. I used everything from frogs, buzz baits, spinners, rattles, football jigs with a crawfish, to a T-rigged lizard. Nothing. We both got skunked.

Its a great spot to fish, and we will definitely be back, but we came up with a goose egg.

Thanks again for the tip on the launch site!
