Ground Breaking for Metal Building

Ground Breaking for Metal Building - 02/22/24 05:21 PM

They started the ground work for the new Metal Building that will be put up. The skills of the guy running this are simply amazing to me. He had one machine that would snap a 10" tree like a toothpick then pull the root ball out. A one man operation he is on day 4 of this.

Next will be the forms for the concrete foundation.

Here are some in progress photos:

Re: Ground Breaking for Metal Building - 02/22/24 06:04 PM

Man, we went and saw a house recently that had what appeared to be a badass shop next to it. Turned out they only poured a footing for the building to sit on and the entire interior floor was just dirt. So disappointing. Had a pond out back and everything. Shop floor + some unsettling flooring issues were deal breakers.

The soil here is very sandy. They had to bring in the red clay dirt to build it up and form a good base layer. The dirt he said was from over by Lake Holbrook area.

Re: Ground Breaking for Metal Building - 02/23/24 01:11 PM

We just poured a slab for a lodge and one for a barn at the ranch, it is all sand as well, we had every concrete truck and the pump truck stuck at one time, started out a big nightmare but somehow we got everything going in the right direction and it ended up going well. I did not see the point in trying to bring a bunch of select fill in for the pad, it is sand all the way to Australia , we dug 30 inch beams a foot wide, went with a 5 inch slab with rebar on 12 inch centers, not going anywhere. If you don’t mind saying, how much for the building only ? Nice place

Jim, the building itself will be 30 w x 40' deep. Added on to the right side, a "porch" that is 15' wide. That makes the 45' wide slab. I want to park the 30' camper on the porch where it will have a 50A hookup.

The concrete company came today and laid out the form boards and dug for the beams. Thursday, rebar and prep and Friday the cement pour. Bringing in a pumper. 2,096 square feet of concrete that includes the 8x37' apron/ramp.

Also, I checked the game camera from down in the woods and finally captured a deer walking through.

The traffic there is what finally did it for us. We were in Rockwall County pct. 1A on Ray Hubbard, and would drive across the bridge into Rockwall. Due to Dalrock road construction at I30 and widening turn lanes at 66 and Dalrock, traffic was re-routed by neccessity through our once peaceful neighborhood. Mornings and evenings you had a 45 minute bumper to bumper ride to get across the bridge. When we first moved there in 2003, you could hardly hear any traffic. When we left, it was a constant roar. Liberalism was rearing its ugly head well into the Dallas county side of Rowlett. Then of course 18 liquor stores went up and with the twenty or more huge apartment complexes erected, it became NE Dallas.

Re: Ground Breaking for Metal Building - 04/12/24 11:18 AM

Only asking from experience, but make sure the guys are framing your main structure tall enough that your shorter awning will still fit a camper under it. Most 30x40 buildings are 12' wall height, which isn't tall enough for what you've got in mind (don't ask me how I know). That said, the pic representation of your building looks probably tall enough if that's a 10x10 door. But worth checking what they think the center height of the awning area will be - center is the max height of most RVs because that's where the ACs are mounted. 13'6" is max road height, although most bumper pull trailers are around 11'-11'6".

Great points. Yes, I discussed this with the contractor and he knows I want plenty of clearance for the camper under the awning. From the ground up to the top of the AC unit on the camper is 11'4". thumb

They grow tall and give some great shade. Supposedly a good hardwood. I have a bunch and other than the spiky balls they drop all over, they seem rugged. Also have some huge pine trees, some cedars and some hickory. And poison ivy. I've been killin it when I see it but some areas are covered, gotta watch where you walk.

Serious question though Bob...I'm only guessing, you're going to be back up your rig in that patch represented by the yellar arrows. Now I haven't seen the place or the approach but, if that's the case, why didn't you just take out the tree that's circled as well and make a clean approach for for swinging around the tow vehicle ?

Dave, I will be able to pull straight in forward and make the bend to the right. It is a straight shot then backing the camper into the covered awning area of the building.

That sand will eat a mower blade in half a season. I have a stack of old mower blades after 25 years out here. When I lived down south the gras was so lush that a mower blade would last several seasons.

I may have to get sod or something for the front yard. Some folks here are talking about planting Clover for a yard. Said it is easier to maintain. I dunno, that will be another project.

I think you will like the entry door location you decided to go with. I`ve built 2 shops with the same roll up and entry door location. It`s a better use of space IMO and it lets you utilize another corner for storage, or a work bench set up like I have in mine. I also try and have everything from sitting directly on the floor if I can. That way I can use a leaf blower and blow it out easily.

Thanks. The electricians came by today, but it will be a few more days until the building is complete. They still need to add the awning on the RH side for the camper.

Re: Ground Breaking for Metal Building - 04/25/24 09:58 PM

They got the frame up partially for the Awning overhang where the Travel trailer will be parked. All 4 walls are up. Next finish the awning and the roof. Then the electricians come to wire it up.

Thanks. No sod. They already put down the red clay select fill but need to dress it up some and add some that the rain moved. Then, crushed concrete on top of that to form the driveway up to the shed and past.
Then compact it.

Looking good. I built my 1st shop totally surrounded by trees, similar to yours. Has to cut down 4 oaks to get it in and still had 1.5' on both sides of my RV when I backed it in. It was snug. The shade was great, but there was no breeze at all circulating thru it. I built the shop I have now with no trees surrounding it and it faces N and S with plenty of breeze on most summer days.

Yes, this one is north south as well. Faces North. We still get some breeze from the South. I have a window on all three sides that are 6' from the floor. I will know more about whether or not I need a mini-split when it is finished. Good thinking about the trees though for sure.

Re: Ground Breaking for Metal Building - 04/27/24 01:53 PM

Do you have plans to finish out the wall with plywood or OSB? My shop walls are 14" and I finished the walls with 3/4" plywood up to 8'. I made sure the electrician didn`t run any conduit that would be in the way. Made that mistake on my 1st shop and they ran conduit on the face of the C purlin on the whole building. It makes it much easier to keep the shop clean and you have tons more space to hang shelving, cabinets and organizing in general.

Sounds like yours is real nice with the plywood wall surfaces. I don't think I will finish the walls inside, at least at this point.

Here are two photos of the building progress this morning. The rain last week really hampered their work, but it is much closer. Today they are putting on the roof. They already have the Awning for the RV up.

They probably have a lot of others going up as well. The 3 guys putting mine up said they have several more to build in the upcoming months. I don't mind the time it is taking, the work they have done is quality so far.

Good luck with yours. cheers

I had a metal building guy quote me at 8 weeks. Ended up taking nearly 8 months. Turns out he was one of those "rob peter to pay paul" guys who was using my money to build someone else's shop and used someone else's money to build mine. It was awful. He ended up getting arrested for fraud and it was all over the news.

They got the roof on and most of the siding and trim. Still a little to go. The garage door was the wrong color so they had to order another one. I would highly recommend this outfit for the quality of work so far.

I'll be able to move some stuff in there after the electricity.

Good point. Now would be a great time to bury the pipes for down spouts. It might cost more, but use smooth wall PVC vs corrugated. So much better for water travel and it will last your lifetime.

That's IF your going to do that.

Yes, agree. But no gutters needed. The overhangs will just let the rain run off. The rain justs sinks down in the sandy soil here.
