National Vietnam War Veterans Day

National Vietnam War Veterans Day - 03/29/24 10:05 AM

Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day,

On March 28, 2017, President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. This act officially recognizes March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

Let me say something to all my brothers who served there. This was rarely said to any of us when we returned home. "Welcome home!"

a group of us had to be escorted thru jfk airport in nyc due to protestors, plane to taxi with no customs stop and still got spit on feb. 15th 1974.

nyc can fall into the ocean as far as I am concerned.

I remember when I was a young teenager there was a older guy that was fishing at Brady lake fishing house.

He had a tattoo on his leg that said something like this" When I die I know I will go to heaven, I already spent my time in Hell 65 to 67. Thank you to all that have served. I don't know who that guy was but I have thought about him n the last 40 plus years flag

I never got spit on or hit with anything, but getting into the SeaTac airport after leaving Ft. Lewis, WA we had to walk between two lines of "hippie-looking" folks who kept calling us Baby Killers, and as we were sitting at the gate waiting to get on the plane to Dallas several groups were walking around yelling the same thing to every group of Army troops they saw.

Kind of surprising that I made it through Seattle airport without issue, got on an airplane back to Dallas and after take off a Stewardess asked if I would like to move to a seat that had no one else on either side so I might stretch out and sleep. Best three hours of sleep I had enjoyed in a year. Found out as we were approaching Love Field that the brother of the Stewardess had been a KIA the previous year. Made my year there feel insignificant compared to her sacrifice.

I have a feeling that the majority of folks were on our side, but they just never displayed it publicly.

After we got new unis and were out-processed, we were taken by bus to the airport and left to our own devices. In uniform we could fly standby fares, but we had to buy the tickets.

There were no big groups gathered at the airport when we landed cheering and waving flags.

There were no folks lining the streets and/or highways when a KIA procession went by to the cemetery. That all started with the guys from Iraq and Afghanistan started coming home, and all of a sudden somebody sad, "We should have done this for the troops coming home from VN." It got better then but it should not have taken 30-35 years for it to happen.

I listened to a former pow give his account. It was the most profoundly moving thing I've ever heard.

My deepest respect for anyone who had to serve there. I was in the Navy, on a submarine off the East coast when it ended. Before that good old NAS Kingsville.

"Shot at and missed (by the enemy) Spit at and hit (by my fellow Countrymen)."

Kinda spoiled my return from the Support Command on Okinawa in mid-1972. 7months TDY in 1970.

Spoiled my outlook on my Service for years until I gave it up to Jesus.

I still have "Survivor Syndrome" but I'm working on that. Lord Jesus, Help me with that . . . .

Welcome back my Brothers, Glad you made it . . . . .

Some gave some, some Gave All. R.I.P. my Brethren . . . .
