When I was a kid, my dad would take me to the junction where Clear Creek meets the Elm Fork of the Trinity River (this is just North of Lake Lewisville), and we would catch quite a few longnose gar (3-6 feet long). Once the gar spawn gets on, you can find them near the mouth of most creeks on Lake Lewisville (and other lakes). They might be mixed in with the carp and buffalo.

I hear the Lake Livingston spillway is full of em. Most of the best areas on the river require boat access though.

Gar fishing in the Trinity River is an exciting pursuit for anglers. Here are some insights and tips related to gar fishing in that area:

Trinity River Gar Fishing Spots:
The Trinity River offers some fantastic gar fishing opportunities, but it can be challenging due to fluctuating water levels and the gar’s preference for snag-infested waters1.
One notable spot is the boat ramp located underneath the US Highway 287 Bridge, south of Trinidad. It serves as an excellent starting point for gar fishing adventures.

Baits and Techniques:
Baits: Cut carp or buffalo fish tend to be effective baits for gar. These fish species are attractive to alligator gar.
Techniques: When targeting gar, consider using heavy tackle and sturdy lines. Gar are powerful fighters, so be prepared for a battle when you hook one!

Guided Gar Fishing Trips:

For Longnose Gar, literally any body of water in the DFW area that bleeds in/out of the Trinity. For Longnose Gar check out the spillways throughout Ft. Worth. I LOVE bank sight fishing for Longnose Gar using "rope lures". When you see them come up for air, try to cast out in front of them and bring the lure slowly to them, they will chase the lure it's pretty frickin exciting to say the least. lol.. You can also catch them on the surface using a small live or dead sunfish on a bobber about 1-2ft from the surface. But...by FAR the biggest Longnose Gar I catch is when fishing on the bottom. This goes against what anyone else will probably tell you, but for me at least the bigger Longnose Gar have always been caught off the bottom using smallish cut bait or live/dead sunfish/bluegill etc. So if you see a bunch of longnose gar in the area, along with sight fishing the surface, keep another bait on the bottom if possible.

For Alligator Gar, under the 287 bridge (Trinity River) is definitely a fantastic choice but it can be pretty dicey around there. Don't go there alone and not without a gun. There are definitely Alligator Gar more up north now due to the heavy floods years ago. The trinity just south of Dallas 100% has them. wink Decent sized cut bait (carp/buffalo) on a single hook is all you need. You don't need the large treble hook that was popular years ago. Now days a strong single hook is all you need, as a matter of fact some anglers are now catching Alligator Gar using much smaller single hooks.
