Cummins 6.7 issues - 10/22/23 11:32 AM
Anyone had similar issues…..
Brought a 2020 Ram 2500 with Cummins 6.7 with 30,000 on it. It was in basically new condition. I have put 5,000mi on it. Drove perfect the first 3,500 or so. Then it got a check engine light. Code is P2002 which is particulate filter below efficiency threshold. I researched it. I figured it was due to short drives during regen cycles and figured it would clear. It went through several full cycles. Didn’t clear but didn’t seem to notice anything driving.
Then it started acting like it was either shirting funny or had some hesitation once in a while at 1,700 to 1,800 rpm. That seems to be progressively getting worse . Then it had code P0229 which is Turbo Underboost. Made an appointment to have a diesel mechanic my buddies use. They are going to look at it on Tuesday.
At first I thought it had to do with the transmission. I don’t think it does because if I down shift and keep the rpm out of the 1,700 to 1,800 range it doesn’t do it. When it goes in that range regardless of gear it does it.
I think it’s got issues with sensors on the particulate filter. I think it thinks it’s not as dirty as it is so it’s not going it to the regen cycle as needed. That’s causing back pressure to the turbo. Particulate gauge is at zero.
It’s out of the manufacturer’s bumper to bumper warranty at over 3 years. It still has the Drive Train warranty. No telling at this point if it’s $500 or $5,000. I can afford to have it fixed. I don’t need the extended warranty. I am so far ahead of the cost over the years I could pay a lot and still be ahead.
I brought it for towing ability after having 4 Ford F150 Super crews. I thought the Cummins was a better motor than the Power Stroke. Always been Ford guy. Got good service out of them. Looking to get a 5th wheeler when retired. Never had a major problem with any of the Fords. Most I have ever spent on one driving to 175k plus was $2,000k for an evaporator coil. Thinking at this point I should have just got another Ford.
