Fished Texoma Yesterday - 04/02/24 09:26 PM

I fished Texoma yesterday before the bad weather rolled in. I found large schools of stripers in 40 feet of water at the edge of a steep drop off from shore I caught fish non stop for a couple of hours ranging from 13 inches to 20 inches. Kept 7 to eat. Of the seven 4 were female and 3 were male. The female egg sacks were all empty and drying up. The males white sacks were completely full leaking out as I was taking the fish off the hook. I thought it was strange that the males still planned on fertilizing eggs this late in spring.

It’s not really that late. Texoma is a big lake and warms up slower. there’s probably a big wave of females, both sandbass and striper waiting at the mouth of the rivers to move up. I almost always found a big wave of females during the first big rain in April on smaller north texas lakes and the hybrids don’t show up good until now, so I’m gonna bet the striper are working the same pattern. That being said, the males tend to stay longer. You’ll always get a wave of small males in the true bass species first, and then you get several runs of males up the creeks even after the females are done. The females also don’t tend to stay up there very long, they swim up and spawn and then head back downstream, the males will stick around.

Very positive statement and spot on .They don't all spawn and they don't spawn at the same time ! When finished Mother Nature has the two species of shad spawning to fatten them up. Not a bad plan .

Sorry for the late reply. Went back out day before yesterday to the same spot where it dropped off to deep water close to shore. Found the school in 40 feet of water. Started with live shad until I ran out. Threw the net a few times to try and catch more shad with no luck. Catching shad after daylight on Texoma is challenging, to say the least. I tried white slab with no takers. Started trolling a deep diving crank bait that was white on the sides and black on top. They loved that and I caught one every pass. Decided to switch it up and try silver with black top. They loved that color too. Tried silver with blue top and caught nothing. Went back to white sides with black top and started catching again.
