Heard they may be having problems, one guy told me he’s had 2 go bad in the last few months. Any truth to this or maybe just an isolated incident?

I had the same with Humminbird and Lowrance customers that have had the same thing happen over the years. I purchased four flood lights for my home at my local hardware store and two out of the four worked. "Electronics, you never know what you're going to get..."
I do not believe it is a Garmin issue across the board. Isolated is what I would call it.
