Not a fan of these " popular " BBQ joints. they never seem as good as mom & pop places. So we just tried blacks. All I can say is WOW. Another let down. We tried the big beef rib( $40.00 for 1 freakin rib ) Well that was a major letdown. Now the whole smoked chicken was very good. and the so called famous mac & cheese was blah as well. I just dont know how these places keep getting so many people for the type of food they serve. Just like I dont understand how there are dickies all over dfw. Lol. But then again I kinda do like bill millers bbq for chain bbq joints. So I guess it might just be me. 😂😂😂

I think that a lot of the BBQ places in Lockhart and their off shoots are way over-rated

In Washington state, we have bbq joints saying owners from texas and reviews are great. I try it and am so disappointed in texture, flavor and smoke. I know these places don't do Texas bbq justice. (Some day I'll make it there to try) I've tried 1 place that does a simple bacon wrapped meatball and cherry wood for smoke(stick burner)...those are freaking amazing. My personal bbq equipment is LBGE,Minimax,RT340 and a table top weber.

Most Lockhart BBQ was a big deal 30 years ago. Now that you can get world class BBQ all over the state it’s kind of lost it’s luster. Next time your down this way give San Marcos BBQ a try. It’s great and so much cheaper than Blacks you will wonder how they make any money.

San Marcos BBQ is fantastic. But since it’s the same distance for me to SM or Luling, I would choose City Market over SM just because I prefer small towns, and San Marcos is definitely not longer small.

Davids in Arlington is great. Make the 120 mile drive about 1 time a year to eat there. Fried okra is awesome!

I travel the whole state. A lot.
Will absolutely go out of my way to latch onto top shelf barbecue.
Unfortunately, a lot of opinions on what's good is not quite the same level as mine.
I use trip advisor when I'm not in super familiar territory, and most of the time it's at least not going to point you to something terrible, but you have to be a little diligent on BBQ reviews, because the pinto beans will get the same amount of rating as the meat.
That said, the places I'll go out of my way if possible:
1. Louie Mueller in Taylor. If you've not been here, you just don't know.
2. Coopers in Mason. NOT to be confused with any of the other non family Coopers.
3. Snows in Lexington.
