I have heard they were good eating , but have never tried them. Now that they are showing up in Lake Palestine, I decided
to cook a couple I caught while crappie fishing. I was pleasantly surprised. Some folks say better than crappie , I won't go
that far , but they are very close. I will be keeping them in the future.

Seems like all bass is good if you eat it fresh. Freezing not as good. I froze a lot of sand bass once, it was not good, but fresh is great. I used to catch and eat a lot of yellow bass years ago.

Maybe that one time I froze sand bass was a fluke, but I never tried freezing any again. Crappie freezes great.

Are you cutting the red meat (bloodline) out? You gotta do that.

Yes, doesn’t matter, I’ve tried every way possible to make them taste half decent and they still come out tasting like [censored].

I caught a bunch of Flatheads a few years ago and they were not nearly as good as crappie.

After hearing people talk about them I was disappointed.

If anyone has ever had Walleye, sauger, and/or saugeye they know that even crappie can’t compare.

Yellow bass is my wife's second favorite fresh water fish. Crappie is her number 1.

White bass taste like a$$. I used to catch a bunch when I lived near the llano river- just couldn’t make them taste good which was a big let down. Last year we caught a pile of yellow bass in weatherford- i wouldn’t even consider keeping them; thinking they were like whites. I’ll have to keep a couple of yellows next time I go out…

There is a trick on the flatheads . First , as with any catfish , bleed well. Second , don't skin, fillet the skin off , leaving a little meat on the skin.
next put the meat on ice for 24 hours. The fat will congeal on the surface of the meat. Scrap this off with a dull knife or spatula.
Now it is ready to freeze or cook.
I caught a 43# on a crappie jig , prepared it in this manner and it was excellent.

I grew up in the Panhandle, Lake Meredith came online when I was in middle school, Caught and ate a ton of walleye.
I fell crappie and walleye are equal , Walleye better if you like a thick fillet , Crappie if you prefer a thin fillet,

your mileage may vary

I love eating flatheads but they need to be 7lbs or less to taste good for me. I grill white bass and either serve them over dirty rice or in fish taco's' I have caught plenty of yellow bass out of Tawakoni but never thought about frying them up. I have always heard they are great eating.

For those that will not eat Stripes , Hybrids and or sandies. ?Thanks . The preparer and cook are critical . I have eaten Walleye and Sauger, good but not snob appeal ! Good to have a choice !
