THSBA is a 501c3, non-profit organization. Therefore, can a boat captain write off the expense he/she incurs from being a THSBA boat captain as a charitable contribution? I was a captain for my kid for 3 years and never did this. Was asked to do it for another team and don’t see where the expense is worth the hassle if not for my own kid. Anyone have an answer? If I can write it off, it may be worth it.
Please don’t tear me up over “that’s not what it’s about.” “Think about the kids.” I’d really like to do it but, the cost is hard to explain to my wife when it’s not our own child.

Never thought about it but I'd assume it would be such a small right off probably wouldn't be worth it. I figure fuel and entry fees; if you did a 100% sponsorship, would be about all a person could claim. I have a start up business going on right now, maybe do it through that if it was worth the effort. I think it would be a good question for your CPA at tax time.

First off speak to cpa..... I'm not one but I googled it... it does appear that you can write off some stuff. The irs has a milage rate set of 14 cents a mile. I'm seeing accounting sites that list lodging and meals as acceptable deductions. I'm also seeing that you can't if it's for a family member. I'd ask accountant and see if the amount is worth the time.
I would also not participate in captains pot if you plan on doing this. You could be viewed as a competitor and not a volunteer. And i think that would change the situation since you would be receiving some value for your contribution. Again ask a cpa.
