Anyone had similar issues…..

Brought a 2020 Ram 2500 with Cummins 6.7 with 30,000 on it. It was in basically new condition. I have put 5,000mi on it. Drove perfect the first 3,500 or so. Then it got a check engine light. Code is P2002 which is particulate filter below efficiency threshold. I researched it. I figured it was due to short drives during regen cycles and figured it would clear. It went through several full cycles. Didn’t clear but didn’t seem to notice anything driving.

Then it started acting like it was either shirting funny or had some hesitation once in a while at 1,700 to 1,800 rpm. That seems to be progressively getting worse . Then it had code P0229 which is Turbo Underboost. Made an appointment to have a diesel mechanic my buddies use. They are going to look at it on Tuesday.

At first I thought it had to do with the transmission. I don’t think it does because if I down shift and keep the rpm out of the 1,700 to 1,800 range it doesn’t do it. When it goes in that range regardless of gear it does it.

I think it’s got issues with sensors on the particulate filter. I think it thinks it’s not as dirty as it is so it’s not going it to the regen cycle as needed. That’s causing back pressure to the turbo. Particulate gauge is at zero.

It’s out of the manufacturer’s bumper to bumper warranty at over 3 years. It still has the Drive Train warranty. No telling at this point if it’s $500 or $5,000. I can afford to have it fixed. I don’t need the extended warranty. I am so far ahead of the cost over the years I could pay a lot and still be ahead.

I brought it for towing ability after having 4 Ford F150 Super crews. I thought the Cummins was a better motor than the Power Stroke. Always been Ford guy. Got good service out of them. Looking to get a 5th wheeler when retired. Never had a major problem with any of the Fords. Most I have ever spent on one driving to 175k plus was $2,000k for an evaporator coil. Thinking at this point I should have just got another Ford.

If it’s the dpf, that will be covered by emissions warranty. Pray it’s something covered, that’s exactly why I got rid of my diesel and don’t want to go back.

Yeah, most mechanics say the DEF systems made the diesels not what they once were.

Probably needs a manuel regen. Short trips on a diesel will cause the system not to regen or not regen frequently enough! Couple of manuel regens should fix it!

These trucks don't like short commutes, make sure you drive it enough to get it up to operating temps and don't idle it like the old diesels. Stop and go traffic will also contribute to your DPF system issues. In short they're not really designed for people that live and commute in extreme urban settings.

Got word back from the shop. They say it needs a manual regen. Also the upper fuel filter has a leak. Find that interesting as there is zero diesel smell. They are going to do the regen and replace both fuel filters.

I am staying away from the 20% biodiesel. Some say it’s ok, some say it will cause issues.

I will try to drive the piss out of it more often .

Apparently they fixed it. Runs perfect. They replaced both fuel filters. They showed 24% life in them. I brought the truck with 30,000 miles now it’s got 35,000. Not sure when they last changed the filters since you can reset the life count with the steering wheel controls. Mechanic said the one under the hood had a leak. Never smelled any diesel.

They also did a manual regen. The thing is the particulate filter wasn’t showing much on the screen. It’s actually higher now at 15% of so. It hasn’t done an active regen yet.

Drove it about 150 miles so far. Runs great. No check engine light or codes.

I am going to try to avoid the short little hops around the house. Thing is my truck and company vehicle are in the driveway. Wife just got a new Hyundai Sante Fe which is super nice. Top end Calligraphy trim level. However, it’s in the garage so it’s a PIA to take it. Also going to drive the Ram at little more aggressive. They said you need to have some decent acceleration and run it hot to help keep the exhaust cleared. Short trips are the devil.

About to head to Delacroix LA on Halloween towing the 22 Majek Extreme. We will see how it does.

I have around 10k on my '22 and use it like any other vehicle. Short hops city hwy whatever and haven't had any issues so far. I always use the Exhaust brake in auto when running around, and full when towing, which I do a couple times a month, 10k RV. I'm sitting at 22% on my fuel filters, and was told by the dealer take them down to 5% and I'll be fine.

Glad you got your fixed, but dont let them scare you

Well that lasted a couple of days and a couple 100 miles. P2002 code is back and it’s starting the skip/ hesitation between 1700 and 1800 rpm. It hasn’t run a active regen yet.

Well it ran an active regen at 70 mph for about 40 miles. Ran a little better after. Seems to be heading south again.

Aggravating as heck. Truck only has 35,000 on it.

I think you’re about to find out why the truck was traded in, it’s got a gremlin.

Not sure what brand of DEF you are using, but I know the duramax hates the expensive “platinum” DEF, try using what Dodge sells for a bit.

Everything I looked at or used is the same 67.5% ionized water and 33.2% Urea give or take a percent or two.

Going to get the shop to run another forced regen before hauling the boat 6 hours to Louisiana fishing . It will probably go into limp mode in New Orleans and force us into the hood. Better throw an extra pistol in the truck and a few additional magazines.

I never buy a used truck. All the trucks I owned I brought brand new. Wife hates buying new and taking the out the door hit, she found this one it was immaculate. Price was ok so I thought no issue. Ran perfect for the first 3000 miles.

Then she went out and traded her Ford Edge in for a new Hyundai Sante Fe.
