Going down there tomorrow. I usually don't fish much in the winter because of deer season. Also, I haven't fished Port Aransas or Corpus much in a boat which is what we'll be fishing out of this time.

Are there fish on the flats this time of year? On the edge of the flats? I know it can vary depending on the temperature that day. I did think about going to Corpus and launching at Clem's. That whole are is totally new to me.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you launch at the Port A Marina, head towards the Lydia Ann Channel and turn towards Aranasas pass, there are several ship tie off spots on the left side of the channel. Prime sheepshead spots, can't miss with live shrimp and dead usually gets em as well.

At the last couple of tie offs a cork and live shrimp fished with a moving tide this time of year will often net flounder at the edge of the channel/flats transition.

Water here is super low.
Reds and trout were both super shallow and really aggressive.

Don't let common opinion sway you from this time of year. The fish are there and shallow too. If you're wading beware of stingrays. It's been my experience that they're everywhere right now. Beware of dense fog.

I'm not a chick.

Skinny water in the afternoon under bright bluebird skies is much warmer that the deeper water. Baitfish and apex predators seek out the warmth there. Look for the presence of bait and avoid fishing in sterile water

It takes a freshwater guy a bit of time to understand how shallow fish you want will be. The simple fact is that’s where the groceries are, and the only thing a 28” redfish fears is out in the deep.

When you see this, you’re in a gaming area. Grass and potholes will hold fish year round.

Get a temp gauge and find the warmest water. Thats where the will be when the water is cold. Even one degree can make a difference.

How much do tides effect the bite? I have heard that it is best when the water is moving, which makes sense, but is high better than low? Or low better than high? Bass fishing in South Texas is rough with our lake levels, and my 8 year old is starting to want to try fishing. We are going to Rockport for a few days next week for spring break, and I am trying to figure this salt stuff out!

Tides are important in some areas, some not so much.
Where it makes decent movement, like along the intercoastal, major passes, and other areas that get a lot of water through them. Way in the back lakes, the tides don't mean much.

Baitfish follow the tides, gamefish follow the bait. Rising tides move them shallow, falling tides move them out of the shallow into passes and canals. Rising tide is better for sight fishing, falling tide gives you a smaller target in where they'll be.

The google map will kinda give you an idea, you can see the major passes that water will move through, those are your falling tide spots, the places like the arrow are high tide super shallow places.
