We have a managed pond where we raise largemouth bass. We stock the pond with sunfish and tilapia for forage. We feed all the fish from spring through the fall so that they grow and reproduce in mass. The tilapia do double duty by consuming (controlling) the aquatic vegetation and reproducing rapidly providing the bass with lots of forage fish to feed upon. Generally speaking Largemouth Bass don't take to fish food pellets as readily as other fish do like catfish, sunfish and tilapia. But the bass that do eat the fish food in this pond are big and fat.. So to "match the hatch" it really matters what the target fish are feeding on most even if it's floating pellet fish food. These flies I tie are meant to mimic the food pellet these big fat bass and sunfish feed upon...

At the end of the last video I tied up another version of the pellet fly that was on a bigger #4 wide-gap thin wire hook with two bundles of deer hair to look like two pellets floating close together. The intent was to catch the bigger sunfish and bass... Well it worked!

Any day now the whitebass will begin the big migration up into the rivers and tributaries for the annual spawn. The males get to the party early and the females follow sometime later. The whole shindig hinges on water and rain which is often in short supply in many parts of the state. My hope is that the small piece of this world I call home will have what the bass need to complete the cycle.. So far so good..

Learned something this evening.. The fish were not very active this evening until right before sunset.
Using a double fly rig, (one " #8 single pellet fly" and one "#4 double pellet fly"). The single pellet fly became saturated and was sinking and eventually made the double pellet fly sink as well. I had one big fish (bass?) take the fly early on (floating) that threw the hook in short order.. From that point forward it was sunfish only and all on the small single pellet fly that sinks slowly.
I got to thinking back over the last few trips to the pond to test the different versions of the pellet fly and realized the most recent "double pellet fly" had only caught bass and it is a full floater. The smaller single pellet fly had caught both but mostly sunfish approximately 8 to 10 sunfish to 1 big bass.
It is also important to note that unless I chum the water with a hand full of pellets beforehand the fish take the pellet fly rarely if at all, And if I chum the water and the fish don't respond I might as well use spinning gear.
And if the fish do respond to the feed, the bass like a bigger floating fly and the sunfish bite consistently on a smaller slow sinking fly.
I'm sure the stocker trout will respond in a similar way especially if they have been in the pond/lake/creek/river for a while... You would need to know the feed schedule back in the hatchery and/or chum the water to get them looking for pellets beforehand..
