Headed out tomorrow and was wondering if any of y’all had some ideas for things to use for chum. I know fermented grain is the best but don’t have any of that made so what are some other ideas? Or can I find that somewhere?? Wanting to chum an area while we bass fish during the day then hit the spot for cats in the evening/night. Thanks!

20% protein range cubes. You can get them from a feed store or tractor supply or Atwood’s, etc.
I would chum three places and split the bag between them. Try a few different depths

After you chum with them you might try this to catch the fish.

As mentioned, the range cubes work great. 50 lb. Bag is about $12. Make sure you get the 20% ones

Dollar stores have mesh “laundry bags” that work well to slow down the dissolving of the cubes, hold an area longer. Can also take small pail or bucket, and drill some 1/2” holes or smaller in it, and tie on a rope and sink. 1-3 gallon buckets work great for overnight or next day type thing. Toss some loose, cast a few around, and then your bag or bucket in the “hole” you plan to fish.

A lot of guides on certain lakes will bait around a tree, etc. - few places, and mark on gps to keep others from stealing their spots.

I have never used the cubes as bait with a hook as shown above, but sure it would work. I just use punch bait when I go back to the hole, or cut bait. About anything will work, as the cubes get the fish there and in a feeding mood.

Seafood/fish catfood is good. It is super oily. We have tried dogfood and it works too but we caught bluecats and channels when we used catfood and just channels with dogfood. Sample size is pretty small for this so could be coincidence.

Some good answers, I feed cattle so I do keep range cubes and cattle sweet feed I mix the two together when chumming if I don't have any sour grain .

Get 5 gallon bucket and pour deer corn about half full and add water. 2 weeks later in sun You have great SOURED deer- corn chum. Channels on fork go crazy on a baited hole. Have a Blessed Day

I had an old timer tell me once to not use deer corn. He said because small cats will eat it and it will get stuck in their intestines and they can pass it. I have searched on internet for proof but never found anything on it. He said to always use small grain like Milo or wheat.

Not sure if this is correct or not but it has stuck in my head so I always use small grain.

I have cleaned eater sized channels before that had corn in their intestines, so I assume fish have a hard time digesting it like humans.

LINEBUSTER CATFISH CHUM.

Buy a cast net and throw around the boat ramp about 30 mins before daylight or right before dark to get you some threadfin shad. This time of year the blues will likely be in the same shallow cover stuff you are fishing for bass in if there is wind blowing into it. Stumps, bushes etc and fish very shallow 2-5 ft. Wind and clouds are your friend this time of year.

Thanks y’all for the info! Used range cubes last weekend and was more successful than I think I woulda been without it. You get a [censored] ton of it too (50lbs) for 12 bucks at Atwoods. Used that and punch bait. I’m definitely gonna be getting some grains to throw in a bucket with a lil beer and water and let it sit in the sun to boil up for future endeavors. The shad ain’t a bad idea either. I used to cast net for bait when I lived in FL for saltwater fishing and the shad are always a safe bet. I’ve done that before. I don’t know much about cat fishing, but do know that I only had 4 days notice last year about going catfishing with a friend. Went to the feed store, bought a bag of sorghum, filled a 2.5 gallon jug 1/2 full of the sorghum, filled the rest with water and 1 packet of yeast per jug. Set in the sun and had some serious sour grain in 2-3 days. Had to keep burping the jugs on the boat as the grain was bubbling so much due to the yeast, thought the jugs might explode.
