I need to repair a leaking shower head, but what is the proper way to purge the water pipes after shut off? I have galvanized pipes and harsh city water, so I normally have another clogged shower once I open the water lines. It's usually the calcium that will clog the seat and spring's.

I usually disconnect the cold/hot hoses from one of the sinks and let the water run. Just wondering is there is another option.
