My dad went into the Navy at 17. He was assigned to a gun boat on that river. He said it was pretty accurate. He got out at age 21 on his birthday November 28, 1941. 2 weeks later Pearl Harbor happened and he we went right back into the Navy.

A great movie from the 1960s, staring Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough, now known as Sir Richard Attenborough, who has made dozens of films about our planet for the BBC.

When I hear his voice I know its a quality production-

Great movie, up there with Preminger's "In Harms Way" for me as long time favorites...

Interesting tidbit - the character Maily that was the focus of Frenchie is acutally Emmanuelle Arsan - the actual "Emmanuelle" for those that are old enough to remeber that book/movie series.

Great movie. It was one of the things that made me embark on a career in the USN
