It was an old strip mine that had been used to do research on growing big bass for many years

In my opinion, there is a whole lot of things wrong with Lake X. I understand that P&W "use it for research" BUT only employees and their friends can fish it. Those fish are state property and to have them in a private lake is BS. If they need to cull or take fish out, open it up to a lottery of residents to fish it and control what happens. I sure sounds like a private park for state employees. I was told Lake X is supposed to be somewhere around Belmead, TX. This brings up La Perla. A ton of share a lunker fingerlings went to a ranch called La Perla. This is a private ranch that was trying to grow a world record bass. The rancher was flying prawns from S America and feeding the bass these high protein prawns. Low and behold, the experiment failed and now he charges something like $2,000 per person a day to fish his tanks that were stocked with share a lunker fry. How the state justifies this is beyond me. See: http://www.laperlaranchresort.com/fishing1.htmlBTW, the freshwater stamp that we approved years ago was supposed to pay for the new hatchery in Athens. When it came time to build it, the state had spent the money from the freshwater stamps on other projects and had to issue bonds to build the current hatchery in Athens. I wonder where all the money goes now? Just another continuous tax and death by a thousand cuts. With the risk of sounding like an old man yelling at clouds, I don't believe this is right in any shape or form. With this stuff going on, I don't know why anyone would donate a fish to share a lunker as opposed to releasing it back in the body of water it was caught in and guaranteeing that its off spring were going to stay in that lake. I understand that we need a state stocking program and game wardens BUT "share a lunker" fry need to stay in PUBLIC waters period. Lake X, La Perla, and who knows what other private waters should be stocked with standard large mouth fingerlings but share a lunker fry should always be stocked in PUBLIC WATERS.

La Perla contributed to the Sharelunker program with fish #559. There is zero issues with the LaPerla fish, TPWD spawned it, if they gave fingerlings from that fish back to LaPerla, that is what the sharelunker program does. I think “deeping” the lunker gene pool by using fish from private waters could be a good thing.
As for “Lake X” being a private lake for TPWD employees, do you know this as fact or rumor?

The Monticello property has a couple large ponds on it. One is about 43 acres I believe.
Fairfield has nothing large enough to be a good big bass lake on it other than the main lake.

I thought La Perla flopped and they lost most of the fish?

I thought La Perla flopped and they lost most of the fish? Maybe so, but they grew at least one 13, and donated it to the program (right or wrong). La Perla was for sale last I knew, growing a world record in a small lake like that is a pipe dream, and even if they did grow one it would be a high fence fish that wouldn’t be nearly as impressive of a catch (imo)

La Perla was originally stocked with Share a lunker fingerlings so #559 was just them giving the state back a fish that the state had given them.
