when your fishing with slabs this time of year and windy, do you use your trolling motor to stay in one place?

Sometimes but I prefer to anchor up and fish them. But most people use the trolling motor.

Once you find fish, you can stay on them with your TM. Slow drift is also a good technique. Don't move your slab much in the winter.

BigDad gives sound advice. I also like to downsize to a 1/2 to 3/4 ounce slab as fish in the winter months usually feed on the smaller threadfin.

Dead stick on a slow drift.

I agree with the advice the other guys are offering ya. I have never tried anchoring like sandjohnny mentions, and I have thought about it several times, and may do that at a couple spots next year. I like to drift, but my biggest problem is the speed in which i drift. This time of year everything needs to be slow, wind blowing on a pontoon boat really stinks. I finally invested in a wind sock, I gave it a shot couple weeks ago on a really good trip. Worked wonders, I took sound advice of people saying get a big one or even two of them. I got one that was 77 inches, really seemed to work well. Don't move the bait much at all, dead stick it with best results. I would also recommend also dead sticking some plastic baits as well when the water temps drop.

Happy BDay Sasquatch!

Whats a trolling motor? lol

Yeah, anchoring works quite well once you've located the school. Otherwise a couple good driftsocks will slow you down enough on normal days.

If I can drift and keep catching fish , I will.
More often than not , you will needed to use the motor
to stay over the fish.
One thing I have noticed on my side scan , large schools
of sandies / hybrids tend to elongated ovals, or irregular
lines. Not round. Small pods tend to be more round. ( as seen
from above). If the school is lined up with the wind, it makes
it very nice to drift. This is my first season with sidescan,
so these observations may not hold up long term.

good luck

It is kind of funny how all the guys use to make fun of me anchoring up. They called it the lazy way of fishing but now I notice a lot of the guys doing it. I think I got started doing it many years ago when we did not have trolling motors.
I find it much more useful in the winter because when you find fish they hold a lot better than in the summer or spring.
Also it is amazing how often you can determine a ridge or hump they are running on and just anchor and they will run a ridge or circle a hump and will come back every few minutes.
If it works just do it . They are many successful ways to catch fish.

Putting out an anchor ain't lazy, its a work-out especially in the wind. I have an anchor but rarely use it because I'm lazy. dance2

Speaking of anchors a buddy of mine gave me one of these for Christmas... They are pricey but I have used one and they are by far the best anchor I have ever used. If it gets caught on something you just pull with the boat and the aluminum fingers will straighten out, then you can just bend them back. Also the stainless steel shaft allows it to lie down and grab the bottom faster, with a anchor chain it catches in no time.
