I went out Friday evening with my 10yr old son. Got over to what I think is Firemans and saw no birds. So went down to dog point and nothing. Heading back to Firemans saw two birds diving, threw a TNT slab and wham pulled in a 13"er first cast. Biggest I have ever caught at JP. That was the lone ranger though wind beat us up pretty bad. I was trying to keep the boat in the spot and let my son fish. Hopefully I will have better luck this week.

What size slabs are people using? I got some 1oz ones. I think they might be to big. Are they?

One ounce is fine. Smaller ones are hard to get to the bottom (with good feel)in this wind.

well heck. I bought a bunch of 3/4 oz tnt's. Those are too small? What's the best way to work them? Vertical or can you cast and retrieve with them?

3/4 ounce will be fine---I was referring to 1/2 ounce and smaller as being hard to feel.

I have had good luck with Moe's 1oz SSS, 1oz TNT 180, and 1oz little dakota. Chartreuse, white, and or sliver holographic. I also like to tie a pet spoon, fly, or a 3" sassy or sea shad with a 1/2oz jig head above my slab. The smaller profile slab or bait you can use the better. 3/4 oz will be fine. Sometimes its hard to use and make it work right in the high wind.

yeah I don't really like anything smaller than 1oz. it is just personal preference on how it feels. I like to be able to sink my slab quickly and keep a tight line on it to feel the bite. Well guys it is only blowing 40+ today so who wants to go fishing, or should I say surfing.

Hey guys I would love to learn some techniques for night fishing for sandbass. I have used a crappie light and minnows in the past but with limited success, are they in the same kind of places as during the day (humps, open water structure, and deeper flats) or are in shallower water? And what kind of lures/techniques do you use to catch them? Does anyone know of any good spots on JP to night fish for sandies? I love to night fish especially with the hotter weather approaching any and all help would be greatly appreciated

I have always went under the bridge and dropped lights. You'll see the boats lined up at dark.

do you try and park over the river channel or do you just set up anywhere under the bridges, also do you favor one bridge over the other? Also have you ever night fished over the humps or flats areas?

JPW, the usual spots don't hold fish like they do in the day. Back in the 90's night fishing was all I did based on my job.
Being that Joe pool has a Bridge that is lit up fish know they can migrate there to see the silhouettes of the baitfish moon, or no moon.
I fish for crappie with lights but when the whites move in you can't keep them off.Get under the bridge so you dont have to compete with the big lights of the bridge and get ready to put some big baits on because the dinks will be all over you.
There are some pretty serious dudes out there with boats lit up like crazy. You can move around with your light in but obviosly you might want to find a spot that you can be still at.
We used to go to Amsted and anchor down, drop our lights then others would just tie to us or whoever, it was fun and the more light the better the fishing.

I agree with Hal
What I have noticed since fishing this lake at night (tied to the bridge w/lights) is that while crappie fishing under the bridge with lights some nights I notice the sand bass running just outside the lights, say about 15-20' outside of your lights. It was hard to get a crappie rig to cast that far to get into the school, yet I was very surprised that the sand bass was running shad at night like they did during the day, I only seen this happen a few times, maybe I drank to many beers and was seeing stuff, who know's.... good luck to ya
