If I go as far down south as I can get on the coast are there any chances for Bone Fish or flats to fish for them in Texas?
Canoes, too, are unobtrusive; they don't storm the natural world or ride over it, but drift in upon it as a part of its own silence. (John Graves)

I am not a southtexan, but I have never heard of bonefish in Texas. TPWD does have a recordholder for bonefish, but under location it only lists Gulf of Mexico, so it may have been caught offshore. There are snook and tarpon in far south texas, so I suppose there could be a lost bonefish or two. If so , july , aug , sep would be the months to try. There are good bonefish flats from Islamarado to Key West, if you are ever in the Keys. good luck MO

No chance of it. I've been fishing SPI for 25 years and 15 of those were with a buggywhip. I had to head to the Yucatan to satisfy my lust for Bonefish.
It doesn't matter how you find the pot of gold, all that matters is that you beat the leprachaun.

Hey CAPPERHED! If you are still going to AP, I have tied up some real nice shrimp patterns in a tan color I would like for you to give a try. Better yet I'll go with you and I can try them out. Let me know if your still going?

Zero chance of bonefish in south Texas. In fact, you won't even find them along the Gulf coast of Mexico. I have fished Campeche, Mexico and there are no bones there...it isn't the temperatures so much as the environment. You have to go to the Carribean... such as Cancun and south....to find bones.
Just returned today from a fabulous trip to Crooked Island in the Bahamas and can provide info if interested.

Meadowlark,Do you HAVE to hire a guide in the Bahamas now or can you wing it on your own?

Copperhead: Talk to LHD. If I remember correctly, he found time on his honeymoon to do some bonefishing w/o having to hire a guide. Don't remember where he went, but he has some pictures in his gallery on TFR of the trip.
Also, looks like I've got the 12th off. If ya'll plan on making a float or wade Sunday before you hit the road, let me know. If you want, we can try some out-of-the-way places.

copperhead,
You can catch bones in some places in the Bahamas without a guide...but I wouldn't try it myself. The guides have fantastic eyesight that can see the bones that most of us will never even know are there. This last trip, my guide was seeing fish in 2 to 3 feet of water 100 feet from us...no way I could see those fish and I'm somewhat experienced. A guide on a bonefishing trip makes the difference between success and failure, IMHO. Spend the money, this is one time it is worth it. You are renting his "eyes" as much as anything and it makes all the difference in the world.

Hire a guide. No question about that at all. It will be worth every penny. The last time I went bonefishing (Andros Island) I caught 4 fish and I only saw ONE of those fish... I couldn't even see the other three take my fly and I had a pretty good idea where they were.
I did go wade the flats on an incoming tide and stalk some tailers (which you will be able to see very easily if you are alert)... but I did not catch one. Luck of the draw. Managed to catch a few fish of various other species, which was fun.
Flying to a remote location and bonefishing without a guide is kind of like driving down the highway and throwing twenty dollar bills out the window just to see them float in the air. Unless you are a very experienced fisherman and have very, very good eyes. Or you bonefish all the time because you live where you can do that.
When I gets the cravin to chase fat girls, I call on Bass Bug
