Good luck casting 1/2 oz two hundred feet. 3/4, 7/8, or 1oz will probably get you there a little faster.

Where are you finding a scenario like that? The Pro Angler Cafish rods I sell are made for long casting but I think you'd have to spool a rod with 6lb line to throw a 1/2oz very far then you'd have that whole line busting issue. Maybe some of the lighter braids would help but I still think you're going to have to beef up your weight for the distance you're wanting to throw.

With my ABU 6500 Blue Younder (stock but for oil) on a Shimano Clarus 8' 6" rod. Using 10lb BigGame and a 1oz sinker I can cast more than 90 yards on a football field.

This past Saturday I was getting a good 60 yards with a 5" Sexy Spoon (1oz?), a 2oz Roadrunner with a 4" Sassy Shad, and a 1oz Butterfly jig.

Its more about technique than equipment. Measure how far you can cast now. Then a google search on distance casting to get a few tips. With proper equipment and good technique you can probably double your current distance.

Using a 1/2oz lure I would think spinning reel with a large diameter short stroke spool on the longest slow action, medium or medium heavy rod you can stand. Spooled with thin line. All of the best quality you can afford and you just might make your goal.

Take a fish boating today!

The wide spool BPS Extreme will do it spooled with 12# Big Game on a 7'6" Medium action rod. I've got a TFO rod rigged up like that for the Hail Mary. I'm sure a good Garcia and lots of the other wide spool reels are capable as well.

My long rod is a 12 foot Cabela's Whuppin Stick. The reel is a Daiwa Jupiter Z 6000. It is spooled with 20# superbraid, and it can cast 1 oz about 100 yards. I have caught several Stripers on this rig but it can get a little unwieldy trying to land a fish with a rod that long though.
You can no longer buy a Jupiter Z but the Daiwa Emcast would probably work just as well.

I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

Check the OP, he was talking 1/2 oz. 100yds is practically out of the question unless you have close to 1oz on there.

Thanks to one and all. The scenario is the trail race waters at Lake Graham throwing from the buoys all the way to the concrete pillons where the fish congregate by the thousands. The throw is a good 65 yards and yes technique is always the answer vs the arm toss. The water has been so low that a one ounce egg sinks and gets hung b4 u can react in order to reel. The pet spoon combo has been a real producer with a two foot leader.

gborg, Well as a resident of Graham Lake my best combo for
the cast is a 7'4" Diawa flippin rod have a Pflueger trion on
one which I have customized by removing half the brakes plus
the spool must be kept full, However I throw nothing less that
3/4 oz weight but not too good, with a 1 1/2 oz slab I sometimes
toss it over the walkway and lose the lure, the trick is to
start cranking as soon as it hits the water when you get up there
depends a lot on wind direction. The other Diawa Rod is the same
but use an Ambassadeur low profile reel. Best resultls is with
Tryline xl 14 lb line on any of the reels, for anything less than
1 oz, I have an old brand x 7ft rod that is not as stiff as
the big ones and a discontinued Lews Blazer Low Dollar reel
same line but casts a lighter lure better My No 2 lure after the
slab is a 1 oz chrome little george, nice casting outfit but
little light getting the fish to the boat. There is a lot of
heavy line accross that place and easy to hook into, some of
my slabs are attached to it. Also the cable with floats around
the poles is ok, but underneath that a few feet there is an
old steel cable that has been spliced a lot with a lot of
frayed ends. The last Hybie I caught there was the first one
that got under that cable on me, and I consider myself lucky that
I finally got him to the boat. There are cast nets, rods and
reels boat props and other things hung on it. I know this because
my Trion came out of there on a 6 1/2 berkley rod, and I have
pulled a cast net out of there. I like braided line for the
strength but it is harder to dig out a backlash, Yes I have had
a few of those. I would sum this all up to wind direction and
speed as to how far and accurat you can cast. I always look where
I am casting, but I don't always cast where I am looking. You
might want to try an old snagless spoon sinker as it will pull
the lure up depending on cranking speed. I hope this helps some
However it is not guarenteed. Good luck.

Of the reels that I have used, US Reels makes the longest casting spinning reel. For your situation you might want to try a weighted popping cork (used in saltwater fishing) with your half-ounce lure tied below.

I saw Damfisherman use his at the Grapevine cat tournament. They're dirt cheap compared to a boat if you think about it.
